About

The SUM Decelerator features the unprecedented collaboration of leading food service companies, environmental NGOs and technical experts. They have joined to create the UP Scorecard, an online resource that measures commonly used foodware and food packaging materials with a single yardstick to offer companies the first-ever, free, and comprehensive tool for making sustainable purchasing decisions.

The SUM Decelerator is a program produced by The Lexicon, with funding support provided by the Food Team at Google. Their activators bring together food companies, NGOs, scientists, entrepreneurs, and food producers from across the globe to tackle some of the most complex challenges facing our food systems, from regenerative agriculture to food is medicine. Instead of an activator for startups or new products, participants design, rapidly prototype, and release ideas for change every six months. Other activators include:

About the UP Scorecard

Developed by a multi-stakeholder group of packaging, recycling, and chemical experts and released under a Creative Commons CC0 License, the UP (Understanding Packaging) Scorecard is an open source, free-to-use tool that offers evaluative criteria based on the latest available science to provide scores in six impact areas: climate, water use, plastic, sustainable sourcing, and chemicals of concern. The tool and source code can be downloaded at Github. To learn more about incorporating the UP Scorecard in your work, contact us here.

The SUM Decelerator has graduated out of The Lexicon's activator program to become an independent organization. It will continue the scorecard’s development by adding features, improving the scoring methodology, and incorporating feedback submitted by users.
